Short Hair, Don't Care

My dreams of Mayhem being a long-haired hippie have been dashed!

Boots has been complaining about how long Mayhem's hair is and how he doesn't want him to look like a girl a little too much.  So last night I finally decided it was time for another haircut, maybe not as short as last time.

Folks, don't feed your kids candy!  Not only is it bad for them blah blah blah, but when you do give them candy you can practically do anything to them, like cut their hair.  Very handy.

He did fuss a little when I was cutting around his ears (I probably would, too!), but he thought it was funny when I got the clippers out and told him they were a truck driving over his head.

One and a half rolls of smarties and twenty minutes later...

Boots is appeased, but said I didn't have to cut it so short.  Good thing it grows back, I'll have another chance before too long.

Bursting

I'm feeling explosive today.  Not in the diarrhea kind of way or even really, really angry way.  Like I am exploding within myself like an emerging butterfly trying to get out.  Explosive in the do-something, create-something kind of way even though the only doing I've mostly been up to is rearranging my closets and I haven't had many creative thoughts to write lately unless you count this post.

Maybe it's because I'm all hopped up on cold coffee and milk and I'm feeling like I'm getting away with something because Mayhem is taking a nap and I'm not.  (I think I've had one nap in the past two weeks.  I must be getting more rest at night.)

Maybe it's because I had an excuse to go to the bookstore and I bought myself, I mean, Mayhem three new books.

And I read them all while rocking him to sleep.

Maybe it's because I gave Mayhem a new haircut this morning and it's obviously gone to his head because he has been so feisty today!

Frank says, "Be careful petting me, boy!"

Ya'll, I love this little boy.  And I do mean little boy because he is not a baby anymore.  Walking and climbing, playing and smiling, he is such a joy and delight to his daddy and me.  (He learned to drink out of a straw this week, tell me I'm not the only person who thinks that is the cutest thing EVER!)

Maybe it's because a friend sent me a Pin and I actually took a few minutes to do something to my hair this morning.  It didn't turn out the way it was supposed to, but I wore it to town anyway.

Miss!

Missed again!

Just take it the easy way!

I have no idea where this will lead or even what exactly the point of me sharing this is, but it's out there.    It's springtime and I'm feelin' good!

Happy weekend!

It's Haircut Time!

Before

Mayhem's been looking a little fuzzy lately.

Before

I've already given him two trims over the ears, but it's been bugging me and I wanted to really cut his hair.  I'm not the type that cries when he gets shots so cutting his "baby hair" hasn't bothered me at all.  It's just hair, it grows back!

I've kinda got a thing for cutting hair.  I cut my dog's hair, Boots' hair, my uncle's hair, my cousin's hair, my brother-in-law's hair.  Mayhem is my latest (and youngest) follicular victim.  I'm not really good at cutting hair, I just like it.  Sort of how I like cutting grass and pulling weeds.  Instant gratification.

Before

So I busted out the clippers!  Boots helped me entertain him and occasionally hold his head steady.

After

It is nowhere near perfect and it's got this reverse mullet thing going on.  (Party in the front, business in the back!)  I kinda wanted it that way.  Didn't want to cut it all.

After

How does he know how to comb his hair?!?!

Two More Failed Hippie Attempts

I'm a self-professed try-it-all kitchen-experimenter.  My mom gets a kick out of hearing what I'm planning to cook up next.  Boots usually just rolls his eyes at me.  A lot All of my ideas come from other people I don't even know on the Internet.  I don't try things the first time I read about them, usually the tenth when it seems like "everybody is doing it" and having a fair amount of success.  I'm not everybody though and success is overrated.  Here are a few things I did while on blogsabbatical.

Back in November I made my own toothpaste.  I gave five of the six jars away to my friends and family and the general consensus was it sucked (no offense, Marnie!)  The ingredients were expensive and hard to find, nobody liked the taste, and the process was a little too labor intensive.  Plus the jar I used vs. traditional tubes was no contest.  You needed a spoon to scoop the toothpaste out as my aunt pointed out the grossness of dipping your toothpaste in the jar day after day you were probably sure to catch something worse than cavities.  It's worth every penny you will spend on the high-dollar natural toothpaste, I promise.

Not one to be easily deterred, I hippied onward.  I'd heard about washing your hair with baking soda and vinegar and figured this would be cheap and more easily accomplished.  Negative.  My hair was dry and crunchy, like hay, and since I need to look very clean for work everyday I couldn't wait for the transition period to pass.  I tried it for about two weeks before I gave up for fear of being talked about in the office.  It was cheap, yes!  It took some planning for mixing the ingredients and then storing them.  If I worked at home I'd definitely stick it out and try again.  Since then I've decided to do the next best thing- buy quality, natural products like Yes to Carrots shampoo and conditioner .  I'm really enjoying this although it is pricey.  The Environmental Working Group gives it a 2 which is pretty close to perfect.  I buy Yes to Carrots at Target so it is easily accessible for me, plus the bottles are #2 plastic which my nearby recycle bin accepts.

The EWG has become a go-to website for me.  I like checking out the ratings on the things I use, but the hunt for safer products in my local stores isn't as much fun yet.  Currently, I'm cruising every sunblock aisle in every store I visit in search of Badger sunscreen.  No luck yet, but I hear Walgreens carries it.

Next on the list, shortly after the hair fiasco, was when I tried the Oil Cleansing Method.  Much like the no-poo, I'd heard a lot about OCM in blog circles on the Internet.  I wouldn't call this a complete fail because I liked it.  Washing my face with oil did make my skin smooth and soft, but it did nothing to help my blemishes.  My aunt and cousin said I was a nut when I told them I cleaned my face with oil.  It does sound a little silly, but it makes sense to me.  It wasn't too terribly expensive because a little goes a long way or hard to mix up, although your kitchen does get a little greasy in the process.  I've got plenty of leftover castor oil if you're in the mood to try it.  (That stuff is hard to find!)

One thing I'm pretty sure I'm not going to try is homemade deodorant.  I'm just not.  I've tried Tom's of Maine, but clearly it's for people who live in Maine! because it does not work in the Sweaty South.  I smell like a man!  --My uncle to be exact!  I may try Arm & Hammer next.

What about you?  Do you try weird stuff?  Have any favorite natural products?

Blue Moon

Yesterday I got my new driver's license with my new name.
It didn't rain and I had probably the best hair day of my life.
The stars have aligned.

Pictures as Promised

This first one is kinda gross.

I went down to the farm this week.
How'd you like to have those horns mounted on your wall?

(Since then I've been thinking
I would love to have a humongous peacock tail fanned out and mounted on my wall one day.
I think that would be so pretty!)

We went swimming in the limestone pond.
This is my cousin, Pea.

Nikki even went swimming!
Here she is with my cousin, Em.

Boots and I went to a friend's wedding on Saturday.

We practiced taking pictures.
(I'm not sure why his purple shirt and tie looks blue in pictures.)

Sunday after work I got the clippers out again.

But this time not on the dog.

I cut my roommate's boy manfriend's hair and it didn't turn out too bad if I do say so myself.

What a scary sight.

Blabbers

I don't have a lot to say since it's still pretty early and not much has happened yet.

1) I almost ran over not one, but two, cats this morning on my way to school.
A sign, perhaps?

2) Today, today, is the proclaimed unofficial last day of organized class as I/we know it complete with graduation practice and I'm sure lots of picture taking.
I think back on my last graduation practice a mere three years ago, yes, I am a baby, and  of how these will soon be people I'll probably never see again and remember somewhat fondly in pictures.
I hope.

3) Speaking of pictures...
Yesterday I received my second year book from this place.
There's only two pictures of me in the whole 200 page complete color thing and in both of them my hair is a flat wreck.
Not a flat wreck, but a flat. wreck.
Awful, just awful.
Couldn't someone have warned me?!

Windy Days Deserve I-talics

Today was quite the blustery day.
I love blustery days.
I love the wind whipping through my hair and pushing against me when I walk.

I don't love the knots the wind puts in my hair.
Last time my hair got all knotted up I didn't brush it for two days in an effort to...
I'm not sure what I was trying to accomplish.
I just didn't brush my hair for two days and the knots fell out after two washings.

I think I'd like living somewhere where the wind blew all the time.
I'd probably have to do something practical with my hair though.
Like braid it everyday.
Or keep it in a ponytail.
